As movie lovers, we couldn’t miss the chance to experience this top-rated theme park, which has been crowned Japan’s best theme park two years in a row. Since its grand opening in 2001, Universal Studios Osaka has drawn millions of visitors as the first Universal theme park in Asia, offering a world-class mix of rides, shows, and immersive experiences.

While Universal Studios Japan isn’t the traditional cultural experience most people seek in Japan, it’s an exciting break from historic temples and shrines. After spending 20 days exploring the country and visiting over 30 temples, we were more than ready for a different kind of adventure! Even though it’s an American-themed park, the Osaka location ensures you’ll never forget you’re still in Japan—from ride instructions to show performances, everything happens in Japanese. So, get ready for a unique Universal experience that blends Hollywood thrills with Japanese excitement!

How to Get to Universal Studios Japan

Universal Studios Japan is easily accessible from Osaka’s city center and nearby areas. The fastest and most convenient way to reach the park is by train:

By Train

  • From Namba Station → Take the Hanshin-Namba Line & transfer to the Sakurajima Line, or take the Sen-Nichimae Line & transfer to the Osaka Loop Line.
  • From Osaka Station → Take the JR Osaka Loop Line to Nishikujo, then transfer to the Sakurajima Line.
  • From Kansai International Airport (KIX) → Take the JR Kansai Airport Rapid Service to Nishikujo, then switch to the Sakurajima Line.

Exit at Universal City Station, and from there, it’s just a 5-minute walk to the park entrance—just follow the crowds!

By Bus

Universal Studios Japan operates direct shuttle buses from Kyoto, Kobe, and Kansai International Airport. These can be a convenient alternative to trains, especially if you’re traveling with luggage or small children.

1. Day Passes

Universal Studios Japan offers three types of general admission tickets:

  • Buy tickets online and in advance! Queues at the entrance can be very long.
  • Arrive early! Gates open 30-60 minutes before official opening times.
  • Download the USJ Official App to check real-time wait times and show schedules.
  • Use Single Rider lines to cut wait times on select rides (Spider-Man, Flying Dinosaur, etc.).
  • Super Nintendo World requires timed-entry tickets, so book a slot via the app.
  • Bring snacks and water. Food inside the park is pricey.
  • Avoid weekends and holidays for fewer crowds and shorter lines.
  • Dress up in themed outfits! Many visitors wear Harry Potter robes or Mario hats.

Best Time to Visit Universal Studios Japan

💡 Best Months:

Where to Stay in Osaka

As you would expect from a major Japanese city, Osaka has no shortage of options when it comes to accommodation. As always, I’d suggest you stay somewhere central, to make accessing all the attractions as easy as possible.

The best places to stay in Osaka are Namba and Umeda. However, my suggestion would be to stay near Namba Station. from Namba station it is an easy 5-minute walk to Dotonbori Arcade, plenty of shops, cafes, restaurants and street food options.
