Welcome to Victoria, Seychelles
Victoria is the capital city of Seychelles where a third of the whole population of 90.000 citizens is living. Although that sounds a lot, Victoria is the smallest capital city in Africa and one of the smallest capital cities in the world.
Yes, Victoria is small and literally, you can see almost everything in one hour or less if you want to. Although everything is rather unspectacular than overwhelming, the city of Victoria is a good place to get a better idea and feel the Seychellois life.
Victoria is situated on the northeastern side of Mahé Island which is also Seychelles main island. Victoria City was originally settled in the 19th century by French colonists and in the year 1814, the British colonial government gave it its name for what it is still known today. The economy of Victoria is primarily driven by the exports of vanilla, coconut oil, coconuts, soap and fish.
On our second day in Mahé, we took a walk around Victoria’s most interesting sights and all in all we need probably 1.5 hours. This is what you should also not miss when visiting Victoria City in Mahe:
Victoria Clock Tower
The Victoria Clocktower is the focal point of the city centre. The clocktower looks like a mini Big Ben and it is actually a downsized replica of the clock on Vauxhall Bridge in London. The mini Big Ben was brought to Victoria in 1903 when Seychelles became a crowned British colony. The erection of the Clock Tower took nine days to complete by dozens of workers from India. The replica clocktower is the oldest historical feature in Seychelles and the most important landmark in the city.
Sir Selwyn-Clarke Market
Probably the most interesting spot in Victoria City is Sir Selwyn Selwyn-Clarke Market and no trip to Victoria would be complete without visiting the local market. The market is named after Sir Percy Selwyn Selwyn-Clarke who was the Director of Medical Services of Hong Kong, and later – Governor of Seychelles. The market is not the only building named after him.
The Sir Selwyn Selwyn-Clarke Market is Mahé’s is the main local market in Mahé and the biggest in Seychelles. The market is the best place to buy fresh fruits, vegetables, spices, and fish, as well as local artwork and clothing. The covered market is a bustling and colourful place to experience the Seychellois way of life. Early morning is the best time to come, and the busiest day is always Sunday.
National Museum of History
The National Museum of History in Victoria City was established in 1964. The museum is an excellent place to find out more about the history of Seychelles and its people. Here you can find the smallest statuette of Queen Victoria, art and traditional folk objects, a map drawn in 1517, and many other interesting things from Seychelles.
Botanical Gardens
The botanical gardens of Victoria are full of singing birds and beautiful flowers and plants that can be found in Seychelles. The garden is just a 10-minute walk south of the city centre at Mont Fleuri, on the outskirts of Victoria. The garden was established in 1901 by Rivalz Dupont – a Mauritian agronomist. Nowadays the botanical gardens are a quiet and green getaway from Victoria city. Here you can spot e coco de mer palms, different spices, exotic and endemic birds, giant tortoises and giant fruit bats!
Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception -The Cathedral of Our Lady
The Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception commonly known as Victoria Cathedral is one of the first churches built in Seychelles in 1874 in a French colonial style. In 1993-94 it was completely renovated, except for the external walls. If you want to have an unforgettable experience with locals you should visit the church on Sunday morning!
