Roaming The Streets of Amsterdam ~ The Netherlands

The Streets of Amsterdam

How to fully experience Amsterdam? The city is best enjoyed by walking around with a big cone of fries in one hand and a huge bouquet of flowers in the other while driving a bike on your way to somewhere. And it is probably raining.

Well, not me. A massive camera with a long-focus lens that weighs more than the health limits require, is hanging on my neck. A cellphone is in my right hand and a 360° camera in my left hand. The sun is shining, and the outside temperature is above 35°. Yes, I had some epic days in Amsterdam while figuring out that this city is in my top 5 for best places in Europe to live in (at least for a while).

I never thought I would like Amsterdam as much as I do. People that I know are whether raving or hating this city. And somehow it is nothing in between. Well, after being here for a week, I can totally understand both groups. I guess Amsterdam is not the best place for very closed-minded or conservative people. The city is droll, young, agile, loud, diverse, modern, colourful. The vibe is unique, the vibe of freedom. Amsterdam welcomes everybody and you won’t feel like a stranger.

There is so much to see and do in Amsterdam. A week or two won’t be enough to explore the city at its fullest, especially if you want to visit some of the best museums in the whole World! Amsterdam has more than 8.000 monuments and museums located within a short distance of each other. You can definitely explore the city on foot or by public transport or bicycle.   The streets and canals are narrow which makes Amsterdam cuddly and cosy.

The vibe of Amsterdam is young and modern and each corner is kind of Instagrammable. There are so many “lifestyle” hidden places around the city where you can snack on a terrace, have a coffee break in a hipster cafe or a dinner in a fancy small restaurant. Amsterdam calls for chilling.

Although Amsterdam is the capital city of the Netherlands, it doesn’t feel that “heavy” as many other European capitals, like Paris, Rome, or Berlin does. With more than 10 kilometres of canals and hundreds of bridges that connect 70 different islands, Amsterdam reminds a lot of Venice in Italy. Well, the water is really everywhere in the city, but again – Amsterdam feels much better to me than Venice ever did.

Have you been to Amsterdam? What did you like (or not) about the city? Which are your favourite places to visit? I’m happy to read about it in the comment section!
