With its 157.3 km², Mahé Island is the largest Island of Seychelles where 90% of the population is living! This fact makes Mahe the busiest island of all, but the word “busy” has a different meaning in Seychelles. When I say “busy” in this article, it means that you will see some people around you 😀 Not the “busy-busy” like an Italian beach in August!
Long story – short: Mahe is small, but you still need a car in order to explore the island at its fullest! The north of Mahé is where everything is happening. In the north, there is Beau Vallon Beach – the most visited beach of Mahe, and also Victoria – the capital city of Seychelles. In the North of Mahe, the mountains are higher and the weather is worse than in the south. It sounds ridiculous, but it is true! The clouds do not go to the south of the island 😉
The South of the Island is wild, beautiful, empty, and underdeveloped – everything I needed to be! The next time when I travel to Mahe, I’ll book my accommodation in the south, somewhere near Anse Soleil or Petit (my favourite beaches in Mahé!).
Here are our the top 10 (+1) beaches you should not miss when travelling to Mahe!
Beau Vallon Beach, Northwest Mahe
We stayed in at Beau Vallon Beach for 5 days right after we came beach from sleepy La Digue. Compared to La Digue’s almost private atmosphere, Beau Vallon turned out to be surprisingly large and full of people. If you arrive from a big city and you spend the first days here – you will probably think that Beau Vallon Beach is rather a sleepy seaside village. So, it depends on where you arrive from on how busy this place feels.
Right after Victoria, the capital of Seychelles, Beau Vallon Beach is the busiest area not only in Mahé but also in Seychelles. Beau Vallon is a wide bay with calm waters and small waves, which is perfect for families with children. This beach is the place if you want to buy something, want to book an activity or a trip, go and eat something or just meet the locals. Here is where everything is happening in Mahé.
There was one more downside though (after being too busy) – Beau Vallon is located between mountains where the clouds are having a hard-core party. I mean, it is raining a lot, because the clouds are kind of stuck between the mountains. That’s the bad news. The good news – by car, you can escape the rain within 15 minutes, I swear! If your drive toward the south of the island, the weather gets better with every kilometre behind you.
If you are looking for a good and affordable place to stay near Beau Vallon, I can recommend these accommodations: La Maison Hibiscus, Beau Vallon Residence, Flower Garden Self-Catering Apartments
Sunset Beach, Northwest Mahe
Sunset Beach is my favourite beach in the north of Mahé, especially (guess what) during sunset! The white sand beach is only 120m long and 5 m wide, the water is turquoise and clear, and there are enough palm trees if you are looking for a shady chill spot. The beach is also perfect for snorkelling because you can see a very old coral formation which makes this place so special.
If you are looking for a good and affordable place to stay near Sunset Beach, I can recommend these accommodations: Chepsted Chalets, Carana Hilltop Villa
Anse Nord D’est, Northeast Mahe
Anse North is located on the Northeast of Mahé island and is a combination of several smaller beaches. This is the reason why the 2km long beach looks so different every 200 m. During the high tide, the water can be deep and the current moderate. The beach is suitable for surfing thanks to the waves and wind. Between November and July, the current brings more seaweed than normal. The beach is very popular in Mahé and sometimes it may become busy.
Grand Anse Beach, West Mahe
Grand Anse, as the name suggests, is one of the main beaches in the West of Mahé. Grand Anse is 1.3 km long and is not very busy, due to its size (there is a place for everybody). The beach is surrounded by mountains and hills. There are enough trees and shady places, the water is deep and the current normal, which makes it perfect for swimming and surfing.
Baie Lazare, Southwest Mahe
It sounds European and it is – Baie Lazare was named after the French explorer Lazare Picault! Another interesting fact is that some locals discovered a buried pirate treasure here!
Nowadays the beach is relatively busy. It is 1 km long and 20 wide. The current brings seaweed between June and September. Otherwise, the waves are small and the current normal, which makes the beach perfect for swimming and snorkelling
If you are looking for a good and affordable place to stay near Baie Lazare, I can totally recommend these accommodations: Les Elles Guesthouse Self Catering, Hillside Retreat, Kanasuk Self catering Apartments
Anse Soleil, Southwest Mahe
Anse Soleil is one of my two favourite beaches on Mahé Island! The beach is only 210 m long and 20 m wide, and there are not so many people here. Anse Soleil is one of the most picturesque beaches I’ve ever seen! The colours are stunning, the water is perfect – not too deep, not too shallow. The white sand is as soft as cotton and there is absolutely no excuse why you should not visit this place during your trip to Mahe!
If you are looking for a good and affordable place to stay near Anse Soleil, I can recommend these accommodations: Les Elles Guesthouse Self Catering, A Peace In Paradise
Petite Anse, Southwest Mahe
My second favourite beach on Mahé Island is located not far away from Anse Soleil. Petite Anse is in four seasons hotel, so you need to park the car outside. After you have parked the car, you have to walk down to the beach which is the tricky part of the whole story – the distance between the beach and the parking area is only 800 m, but it is steep! The way down is ok, the way back … You rather find somebody to give you a lift as we did!
Once you have made it to the beach, it is everything you could ask for – powder white and soft sand, pristine turquoise blue water and the surrounding mountains and rocks! The scenery is unique, and the feeling too! The water gets deep quickly but is absolutely suitable for swimming and snorkelling.
Anse Intendance, Southwest Mahe
Anse Interdance is a beautiful 1km long beach with a private atmosphere as there are almost no people here. The sand is again – white, soft and powdery. The water – turquoise, clear and warm. The beach is surrounded by beautiful rock formations and mountains which make it look like a postcard. The beach is often voted to be in the top 5 for best beaches in Seychelles.
Anse Takamaka, Southwest Mahe
Anse Takamaka is a gorgeous 500-m-long beach with a benefit! The water here is shallow, and the current – low. This makes the beach perfect for snorkelling and good for families with small children
The Benefit is the Restaurant “Chez Batista” located at the end of the beach! Here you can enjoy a Creole Lunch “All You Can Eat” for 25 € p.p. and the food is great! I can totally agree that the food was the best of all we had during the 2 weeks in Seychelles.
If you are looking for a good and affordable place to stay near Anse Takamaka, I can recommend these accommodations: Captain’s Villa, Chalets Bougainville, Surfers Beach Self Catering Chalets
Police Bay, South Mahe
The Police Bay is a totally empty beach located on the south tip of Mahé. The water here is deep, and at full moon, the waves are much higher than normal which makes the beach perfect for swimming.
Anse Forbans, Southeast Mahe
Again, Anse Forbans is a beautiful beach with a benefit 😀 The restaurant here, called “Surfers Beach Restaurant” is my second favourite place for enjoying lunch in Mahé. If you decide to go there, check the fried and crispy fish, it was the BEST I have ever had!
Although the Restaurant is called Surfers Beach Restaurant, Anse Formans is not a good place for surfing. The water is calm and shallow, there is almost no current and it is absolutely not suitable for surfing. Snorkelling is a good Idea though!
If you are looking for a good and affordable place to stay near Anse Forbans, I can recommend these accommodations: Domaine Desaubin Luxury Villas, Demeure de Cap Macon, Takamaka Green Village
