In order to get a full program of “must see” places in San Diego, there is no doubt, that the Old Town is an absolutely essential part of its identity. As everything in the USA, is older than 100 years is meant to be a „historic place”, so does this old town too. There are a lot of “historic” buildings to visit: you can spot the first church and newspaper office in the city, an original cigar and pipe shop, a schoolhouse, a lot of Mexican art shops ethnic art and craft, as well as numerous museums and Mexican “yammi” restaurants. I should notice, we were pleasantly surprised by the fact that there was no charge to enter the old city or any of its museums.
San Diego is considered as the “birthplace” of California. The first people, a native Indian tribe “Kumeyaay”, were living 9,000 years ago in this area and called themselves Diegueño (later used as Diego). Somewhere in the 17th century, the first Spanish settlement in California was first established here, and later in the 18th century, the Europeans build the first church in the Old Town of San Diego.
To be honest, I was really flashed by the Mexican and native art and craft and it was really hard NOT to buy anything … or at least not everything! The Old Town is a compilation of beautiful and colourful architecture, gorgeous flowers and tropical plants, absolutely friendly people and delicious kitchen … Definitely a “must see” and “must feel” place and perfectly spent afternoon in this lovely city!
