Koh Phangan in 2021

by Tsvete Popp
Koh Phangan: The place that surprised us most! Our official plan for visiting the Gulf of Thailand was to travel directly to Koh Tao. Unfortunately, the first week was Sonkran (the Thai New Year) so everything was more or less booked on the small island and the rest of the places were way too expensive for what they can offer. So we decided to visit Koh Phangan first.
We stayed for two nights at Wanpratheep Village Koh Phangan and then we moved to FarmSaiJai where we stayed for the next two weeks.
Koh Phangan
Koh Phangan was different than expected. I don’t even know what we were expecting from a major party island in Thailand – Phangan was everything but not what we had in mind! Of course, we are traveling during Pandemic and I have no clue what this beautiful island looks like during the normal season, I guess it is as fill as all the other places in Thailand.

Koh Phangan

Right now, it had the right amount of people. It was not as empty as Phuket and the people living/staying there were different (the vibe we were searching for). Right now, many digital nomads and people who fled their own countries due to the Pandemic are living here. It was a little bit like Canggu in Bali, but actually, it was much more relaxed and people were respecting the covid rules, different from the majority of people who were living in Canggu.
Koh Phangan
The island is still lush and green. There are almost no massive hotels and everything feels very natural. Unfortunately, it is hard to find a place in Thailand where you can still have this feeling in 2021… So all in all, Koh Phangan turned out to be our favorite island – interesting people, beautiful nature, beautiful beaches, enough infrastructure, the best internet we had in Thailand (and during all our travels) so far, and it was not expensive …

Koh Phangan’s Beaches: Koh Phangan in Thailand is certainly one of the most amazing islands in the country. Home to yogis, digital nomads, art lovers, backpackers, and party-lovers, the island has to offer a lot! Above all, Koh Phangan has numerous picture book beaches that can make every beach lover’s heart start beating faster… Many travelers ask us what the most beautiful beaches on Koh Phangan are. This is not so easy to answer, because everyone has different expectations on a beach and the tastes are different. But if we had to name only 3 favorites out of all 30 Phangan’s beaches, they will be Zen Beach, Haad Rin, and Malibu.

Another unique spot on Koh Phangan is the place where it meets the small Island of Koh Ma! If you want to go snorkeling off the beach in Koh Phangan, probably the place to go is Mae Haad beach which is next to the tiny island of Koh Ma. You can walk to Ko Ma along a sandbank. Koh Ma itself is a small island with a very small beach on its south side which is connected by natural sand walking path to the larger adjacent Mae Haad beach.

Where to Stay in Koh Phangan

As you would expect from a major tourist destination in Thailand, Koh Phangan has no shortage of options when it comes to accommodation. As always, I’d suggest you stay somewhere central, to make accessing all the attractions as easy as possible.

There is a really wide range of accommodation on the island of Koh Phangan. Whether you are a backpacker, a family with children, or an individual traveler, there is no doubt you will find a perfect place to stay here. From backpacker hostels to bed&breakfasts, bungalows by the sea, yoga retreats, and luxurious 5-star hotels, everything is available here.
