Hiking to Anse Marron, La Digue
My favourite day and the highlight of our trip to Seychelles was the hiking to the best-kept secret of La Digue – Anse Marron beach. I was looking for Hiking and Nature Trails on La Digue Island before we travelled to Seychelles and I came across the Website of the “Sunny Trail Guide” Robert Agnes – the best outdoor guide in the region. And yes, we enjoyed the most beautiful sights on La Digue during our hike to Anse Marron thanks to Robert!
Sometimes you just get lucky so did we on La Digue island! We had only 4 days and it was already day 2 as I decided to book the hike to Anse Marron. Somehow, I was not aware that this tour is always fully booked. Nor that Robert is guiding this tour only several times in a month. Nor that this hike is possible only during low tide. But as it sometimes happens, you just get lucky and is better not to ask why 😀
You can book the tour and find more information here:
The whole island is small enough to walk and hike around, but it is big enough to get lost without a guide. There are some specific walks that give you an opportunity to truly get the most out of your trip on La Digue. You can choose between different trails through this island paradise. But I was sure that the hike to Anse Marron will be the most memorable adventure for us as we truly enjoy hiking in our free time.
The hike on Anse Marron is for all who aim to discover the island by foot while soaking in the scenic charm of the small island.
What to Know Before You Go to Anse Marron
The Most Important Thing: You need to be fit! You have to climb up and down a lot and if you have any injuries it simply won’t be possible for you to manage the hike.
Duration: The tour takes about 6-8 hours, depending on how fast or slow the group is
Costs: 40,00 € p.p. for the hike + lunch
Meeting Point: 8 o’clock in the morning at the heliport (the entrance of L’Union Estate Farm)
Why You Should Take a Guide: We are kind of advanced hikers but we were on La Digue for the very first time! Hiking in the Alps and hiking through the jungle and granite rocks is nothing to compare! GPS is not really working when you are in the jungle. The paths are often not visible or very hidden. Every year there are enough people who spent the night in the jungle because they didn’t find the way out of it.
The Guide knows everything about the plants and animals on this island. You will learn a lot about La Digue during the trip. Robert also imitates the noise of the very rare Paradise Flycatcher that the birds will come very close to you.
The guide also will help you climb on/through/under the rocks – and this was the trickiest thing ever! The hike can be a bit adventurous but Robert always shows you where you have to put your feet and hands while climbing and even carries your backpack if necessary!
When you reach Anse Marron you will get a wonderful lunch with local fruits, fried chicken and samosas! Otherwise, you will have to carry it all yourself.
Summary: The tour demands a lot, but it’s really fun! To walk around the south of La Digue from Grand Anse to Source D´Argent and swimming at Anse Marron is absolutely fantastic! If you are planning to travel to La Digue, I highly recommend the hike to Anse Marron with Robert!
Guided Tour Anse Marron
The hike to Anse Marron is for discerning nature lovers! Anse Marron can be only reached by hiking through countless granite rocks and dense forests. But everything is worth it because of the fantastic views while hiking!
The tour starts at 8 o’clock in the morning at the heliport (in front of the entrance to L’Union Estate Farm). We were about 14 people (English, German and French Speaking). Actually, I didn’t expect so many people on this tour, but later we split into 2 groups – English and French-speaking. The second group got another Guide and we were hiking separately.
From the heliport, we were picked up by Robert who came with the typical for La Digue Beach Taxi. We drove to Grand Anse which was about 10 minutes of drive through the jungle (the only “road” through the jungle!). As we arrived at Grand Anse we split into 2 groups. At 8 o’clock we were alone on the beach and I could take some great shots without people running around.
The trail is a mix of a dream beach discovery, trekking through the dense jungle, canyoning through the water, climbing over/under/through granite rocks, and relaxing on the beach. From Grand Anse, we hiked to Anse Songe, Grand L’Anse, Grand Cap, and Pointe Camille. After 2½ – 3 hours we arrived at the Anse Marron. The beach is incredible, and we were the only people at least for 1 hour! The sand is amazingly soft and the rock formations are quite unique! The sandy beach itself is surrounded by rocks that form a natural pool. The rocks protect the “pool” from waves which makes swimming here possible. You should not swim behind the rocks because the current is too strong here.
We spent about 1½ – 2 hours at Anse Marron, we got the best tropical lunch, we were swimming and snorkelling, and I made 3000 photos 😀 After the break, we continued toward Anse aux Cedres, and Anse Pierrot, and we hiked through some really dense jungle.
In the jungle, we spotted many small animals, and interesting plants and Robert told us so many interesting facts about the flora and fauna of La Digue. For example, I saw a cinnamon tree for the very first time in my life and I even chew on some leaves (it was delicious!). The best thing – we saw the very rare Paradise Flycatcher! The Seychelles Paradise Flycatcher is a bird found only in Seychelles.

We took a break in order to learn more about “surviving” in the jungle (or how to find something to eat and drink…). Robert climbed on a palm within 30 seconds in order to get some coconuts for everybody in the group. He showed us how to open a coconut by using only our hands and the sharp edge of a rock. The coconut water was refreshing and the nut itself – was delicious. We continued with walking in the water on Anse Pierrot and between 2:30 and 3:00 p.m. we arrived at the most famous Anse Source d’Argent!
What to Pack for the Tour to Anse Marron
Water Shoes: You either walk on the sandy ground, climb over rocks or walk through the water. If you have some good water shoes – leave them on! My water shoes are not robust enough for climbing so I was hiking with my sneakers. Flip-flops are a No-Go! The rocks are really slippery or very sharp. Climbing with flip-flops or barefoot is No Fun At All!
Water: For the 6 to 8 hours you will need at least 2 l alone! It gets really hot between 11 am and 3 pm. The hike is not that easy, so trust me – even 2 l is not enough!
You will also need: suncream, sunglasses, cap, swimsuit, towel, camera (+ action camera)
The adventurous hiking to Anse Marron is my very favourite activity during our trip to Seychelles! I can totally recommend it and if I’m lucky enough to visit La Digue for the second time in my life – I’ll do this tour again!
