The much-anticipated international train service between Bangkok and Vientiane officially launched on July 19, 2024. This new service, an extension of the existing Bangkok-Nong Khai route, significantly enhances connectivity between Thailand and Laos, offering a convenient and scenic travel option for tourists and locals alike.

Route and Travel Time

The train departs from Krung Thep Aphiwat Central Terminal Station in Bangkok at 9:25 PM and arrives at Vientiane's Khamsavath Station at 9:05 AM the following day. The total journey time is approximately 12 hours, including a brief 20-minute segment from Nong Khai to Vientiane.

  • Third-Class Fan Seat: THB 281 (€7.50) – Basic seating with fan ventilation.
  • Second-Class Air-Conditioned Seat: THB 574 (€15.30) – Comfortable seating with air conditioning.

Tickets can be booked up to 180 days in advance through various methods:

  • Online Booking: Available via the State Railway of Thailand’s (SRT) official website, mobile app “D-Ticket”, and 12GoAsia.
  • At the Station: Tickets can be purchased at any railway station across Thailand.

Arrival and Local Transport

Upon arrival at Khamsavath Station in Vientiane, travelers can access various local transportation options, including taxis and vans, to reach downtown Vientiane, located about 7-9 kilometers away. The station also connects to the high-speed Laos-China railway, allowing further travel within Laos or to China.
