Drive Through ~ San Francisco

In the third blog post from San Francisco, we are going to visit one of the most interesting streets in the world – the Lombard Street, known for its atypical steep section with 8 hairpin turns. The probably most crooked street in the world was not just a fancy project during the days in 1920. The answer to the question, why would anyone build such a street is – safety. The slope of the Lombard Street is really steep and the accidents were happening more than often.

Nowadays, the Lombard Street is a very beautiful place to visit, with wonderful and gorgeous smelling flowers! The cars are supposed to drive with ca. 5 km/h and is quite fun to watch them following the sharp turns, especially the larger ones. And again – the view from above the street is uniquely beautiful!

After several kilometres of a walk, in the afternoon we decided to trust the car and give some rest to your feet. And if someone has to decide to visit only a single part of the city, most likely it will be the legendary Golden Gate Bridge. Since 1920, with all its vividness, the bridge is a symbol and integral part of San Francisco’s history. Golden Gate Bridge is 4.8 km long and till the 1964 year was the longest suspension bridge in the world.

You can cross the bridge by car. But in the mornings and in the afternoons it is also open for both – pedestrians and bicycles. We decided to take a short drive to the village of Sausalito, located on the other side of the ocean that separates San Francisco from San Rafael. The feeling was kind of unique and a bit like in a movie … The panoramic view of the city and The Golden Gate is definitely worth the walk.

In the very end of this very long day, we spent the last hours of sunshine on the Ocean Beach, known for its powerful currents and waves that only the most skilled surfers are able to enjoy. It is absolutely not the right place for casual swimmers, because of the waves and the average temperature of 13° … brrrr …

So, we are at the end of our first day in San Francisco and at the end of today’s post. For the next time, I have prepared for you some stories and pics from the Museum of Fine Art, the Japanese Garden, the most famous hippie neighbourhood, etc.

Enjoy the day!
