Why you should travel to Amed?

Amed, Bali has long been considered a hidden gem where you can get away from the tourist crowds of south Bali and kick your feet up on a remote beach or go scuba diving. And even if you’re not going to Amed for the diving, it’s still one of the most quiet and peaceful corners of Bali, with some of the best sunsets and volcano views on the island.

Amed consists of several small fishing villages along a long coastal strip in East Bali, and offers a totally different experience compared to tourists hubs like Kuta and Ubud. There isn’t a heck of a lot of information about Amed out there, so I wanted to share my recommendations. Find out everything you need to know about the area with the best things to do in our Amed travel guide!

Villa Sky Dancers Amed

If you like diving and snorkelling and everything else to do with it, the fishing village of Amed is the place to be. Amed is just one of the seven villages in the eastern shoreline of this island. It was and still is famous for salt farming and you could get a glimpse of it too, while you are there. The coastline is the perfect place to learn some diving too, if you don’t know it already or you could just go about exploring the surroundings of this calm and mostly untouched beach on a motorbike.

Top Things To Do In Amed

1. Enjoy some of the best diving in Bali

Needless to say, diving in Amed is what people from long and far come for. There are many options for diving and snorkelling in this untouched paradise, but the one you should not miss and one that it is famous for is the wreck of a sunken Japanese fishing boat. Called the USAT Liberty, this shipwreck was a transporter in the second World War. It is treasure trove for those interested in history or things that are antique. If you are the curious one, dive in to explore the wreck – a unique experience altogether.

3. Take a trip to Pura Lempuyang Temple

Pura Lempuyang Temple is one of the six most important sanctuaries in Bali and should be top on your Bali itinerary for many good reasons. Whether you want to explore Bali’s spirituality, religious customs or simply want to take the most epic photograph at the Lempuyang Gates of Heaven –  this is the place to visit!

Pura Lempuyang Temple also known as Pura Penataran Agung is the second most ancient temple in Bali and is a part of six most important Bali temples, also called the pillars of Bali.

This Hindu Temple sits on the top of Mount Lempuyang in the eastern part of the island. It is an active place of religious worship and all Balinese people aim to visit all six main temples in their lifetime. For this reason, it is important to be respectful and follow the modest dress code and behave with regard.

4. Visit Taman Ujung

Before we came to Taman Ujung Water Palace, we thought it would be just okay, but it turns out has been leaving a deep impression on me. It’s very gorgeous!! Taman Ujung Water Palace is a marvellous water park consisting of three large pools and the main building in the middle of the pool is named Gili Bale, which is connected to the edge of the pool by European-style bridges. It was built-in 1909 by King of Karangasem I Gusti Bagus Jelantik as his recreation and relaxation site.

The word ‘Ujung’ means extremity in the Indonesian language. This often makes it easy for local people to describe its location as one of the largest historical landmarks and places of interest in the most eastern part of Bali island. A water palace known as the Taman Ujung or Taman Sukasada Ujung in the local language is one of the palaces made by the late King of Karangasem and is located in Seraya village in Karangasem regency. This beautiful water palace in Karangasem features big fish ponds and surrounds the Karangasem Empire building which the king used for relaxing and a meeting place during his time.

5. Visit Tirta Ganga

Tirta Gangga water palace is a former royal palace in Karangasem, east Bali, built in 1946. The beautiful Tirta Gangga water palace is still owned by the royal Karangasem family. It features 1.2 hectare of ponds and fountains surrounded by tropical gardens and stone sculptures of mythical creatures. You can feed the Koi fish in some of the fish ponds and walk around the gardens to admire its beauty and the history.

Tirta Gangga is based on the beliefs of Balinese Hindusm, where the river Ganges and it’s waters are considered sacred. When translated, Tirta Gangga means water from the Ganges.  If you love trekking in the midst of water fountains, pools, gardens, stone structures and the nearby rice fields then this is the place to be.  The area is certainly one of the best and scenic walks in Bali, suitable to people of all fitness levels.  A camera should be ready at all times!

7. Rent a Scooter and Explore Amed

Probably the best way to explore Amed and its surrounding is by scooter. A scooter costs around 50,000 – 80,000 IDR a day (not including fuel). A scooter will give you access to the entire coastline, town, and hidden spots, just waiting to be explored.

8. Enjoy the Sunrise and Sunset on the Beach

In between all of the activities above, try to fit in some time to relax. Amed is a beach destination first and foremost, so spend a few sleepy days on a sun lounger admiring the view of the mountains and sipping on a coconut. The best surprise when arriving in Amed is that you can actually enjoy the sunrise that is coming from behind Lombok Island. Amazing!

Sunset AmedAmed is Bali’s main northeastern beach destination and tends to be the underdog in Bali, but is actually really worth a visit. Amed has a nice tourist area, a long sandy beach coastline, and plenty of beautiful accommodations.  While the area is naturally quieter and more secluded compared to the central areas of Bali, there are still a plethora of things to see and do here. After spending 5 days in Amed, I can’t imagine taking another trip to Bali without visiting this perfect paradise.
